2023-2024 the Year in Review

2023-2024 was a busy year for SACUBO.  Beginning with the Planning Meeting in June 2023, the constituent committees and the Board members met to start planning for the year.

CBMI

On July 23–28, 2023, 711 attendees from 31 states, representing 230 colleges and institutions, gathered at the University of Kentucky for the 70th College Business Management Institute (CBMI). There were over 325 first-year participants, and 130 of the registrants completed the three-year Institute. Participants were able to earn up to 28 CPE credits.

Fall Board Meeting

At the Fall Board Meeting in September 2023, in addition to taking care of regular business items, the Board spent time focusing on conference planning and member engagement.

Fall Workshop

The Fall Workshop was held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in historic Alexandria, Virginia, on November 1-3, 2023. There were 325 attendees, and the theme was Resilience… It’s Historical!

General session speakers were Chris Singleton (former professional athlete, now an inspirational speaker and best-selling author) and Adam Stoverink (expert in leadership and team resilience). Attendees were able to earn up to 15 hours of CPE as they selected from accounting track sessions and concurrent sessions.

Women’s Leadership Forum

SACUBO hosted 218 attendees at the 9th Annual Women’s Leadership Forum at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 7-9, 2024.

Attendees were able to earn up to 8 hours of CPE and were challenged to Dare to be Different as they heard from women leaders including Amelia Rose Earnhart (a boundary pushing, around-the-world pilot) and Dr. Bobbie Knight (President of Miles College).

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting was sold out with around 660 in attendance at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 14-16, 2024. The theme of the Annual Meeting was BE BOLD!, and the opening reception was held at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs. General session speakers were Kara Freemen (President and CEO of NACUBO) and Sara Ross (Founder and Chief Vitality Officer at BrainAmped).

Attendees were able to earn up to 16 hours of CPE as they selected from around 50 unique sessions, and the exhibit hall allowed attendees to meet with business partners offering solutions to address challenges in higher education.

Congratulations to Susan Maddux who was the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Service Award and to Berry College who was selected as the 2024 Best Practices Grand Finalist. Both were recognized at the Annual Meeting.

Year in Review

Other focuses for the year included strengthening business partner relationships, working with the University of Kentucky to ensure a path for a continued successful partnership for CBMI, outlining and documenting roles and responsibilities, and moving more documents to an electronic format.

A special thank you is due to the Board and committee members for the work that has been done this year and for all that has been accomplished. And thank you to our business partners for your support in making this another successful year for SACUBO.

I am humbled to have served as your SACUBO President this year, and I look forward to what is to come in 2024-2025.
